Abstract

This article is about the lecturers’ and students’ preference on Standard English and or World Englishes. Inherent in this article is whether or not lecturers’ and students’ answer resonate with Linguicism and also native speakerism. The data for the lecturers are generated through semi-structured interviews while for the students are through survey and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that, although mostly the lecturers and students operate themselves with dominance standard English (British and American English), critical perspectives is shown by a lecturer with gender studies and world cinema background and also by students. The disciplinary course, mainstream or critical perspectives of study during post- graduate studies, domestic or study abroad experience appeared to shape lecturers’ positioning toward Standard English for lecturers. Interestingly for students, even though they perpetuate native speakerism and linguiscism, two students mixing languages in the classroom emerged during learning process. This requires us to call for more plurilingual or ecological approach to teaching English(es).
