Abstract
the findings of this research paper reveal a complex interplay of religious, ideological, social, and economic factors influencing the niqab mandate in Indonesian educational institutions. The multifaceted motives—ranging from preserving pesantren traditions and reinforcing Islamic values to pragmatic considerations of safety and economic targeting—demonstrate that the niqab policy is deeply entrenched in institutional identity and cultural continuity. While the policy aims to cultivate discipline and uphold religious teachings, it also raises significant concerns related to individual autonomy, gender discrimination, and the diversity of religious expressions among students. The varied support and perceptions among students highlight the need for a nuanced understanding and potentially more flexible dress code policies that consider students' comfort, identity, and the broader implications for their well-being and future prospects. The insights gained emphasize the importance for policymakers to balance the benefits of such regulations with the potential drawbacks, ensuring an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
