Abstract
The traditional Kuda Lumping art form in Ngantang District, Malang Regency, faces preservation challenges amidst the currents of modernization and cultural changes in society. The main issue that arises is how this art can survive, adapt, and remain meaningful to its supporting community. Based on this background, this study aims to uncover the history of development, ritual elements, and socio-cultural meanings contained in the Kuda Lumping tradition in the region. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, because it focuses on an in-depth understanding of cultural values and meanings from the perspective of the actors and the community directly involved. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and photo documentation and performance archives, with 11 participants, including the head of the community, handlers, dancers, gamelan musicians, village elders, village officials, and regular audiences. The data analysis process follows the Spradley model, which includes the stages of domain analysis, taxonomy, components, and cultural themes to obtain the overall meaning of this art practice. The results of the study show that Kuda Lumping in Ngantang has developed since the 17th century, introduced by Prince Karaeng Galesong and preserved by Mbah Sebojoyo through the KMS association. Over time, this art has undergone transformation through the addition of modern musical instruments such as organs and bass drums, but still maintains ritual elements such as the suguh procession, offerings, prayers, and trance moments (ndadi) that reflect the spiritual relationship between humans, ancestors, and nature. Thus, Kuda Lumping in Ngantang can be understood as a dynamic and adaptive cultural tradition, which is able to adapt to changing times without losing the spiritual roots and local wisdom of the Javanese people.
