Abstract
This study investigates the teaching of sharaf (morphology) from a cognitive perspective at STAI Ali bin Abi Thalib Surabaya. Its objectives are twofold: first, to examine the sharaf learning process
through the lens of cognitive learning theory; and second, to identify the teaching methods used to support this process. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, drawing data from observations of second-semester students and interviews with the sharaf course instructor and the Head of the Arabic Language Education Program. Data analysis follows the interactive model by Miles and Huberman, involving data collection, presentation, reduction, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that sharaf instruction using a cognitive approach includes all three stages of cognitive processing. Declarative knowledge is built through structured planning and delivery, associative knowledge emerges through practical application and linking theory with usage, while procedural knowledge develops through repeated practice, direct correction, and habituation in real contexts. The study also reveals that different teaching methods support different types of cognitive development: lectures mainly foster declarative knowledge; the deductive method introduces associative understanding; the question-and-answer method supports all three cognitive stages; and memorization, when practiced consistently, is most effective in developing procedural knowledge through the automation of rule application. Overall, the sharaf learning process at STAI Ali bin Abi
Thalib is both theoretical and practical, aiming to enhance students’ mastery of Arabic in a gradual and integrated manner.
