Abstract
This study examines the linguistic landscapes (LL) of three Islamic universities in East Java: UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, UIN Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, and UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. It explores how language use in public signage reflects institutional identity, language policy orientations, and broader sociocultural dynamics. The findings indicate that Bahasa Indonesia predominates in monolingual signage, while bilingual signs commonly incorporate English and Arabic. In addition, a limited number of multilingual signs combine these languages with regional dialects. The analysis demonstrates that Bahasa Indonesia functions as the primary medium for communication and administrative purposes, affirming its role as the national language. English is strategically employed to index modernity and global engagement, whereas Arabic, although less frequently used, serves to reinforce the Islamic identity of the institutions. The presence of multilingual signage, albeit limited, reflects the universities’ attempts to negotiate national, religious, and international affiliations simultaneously. Overall, this study contributes to the expanding scholarship on linguistic landscapes in educational contexts by highlighting how campus signage participates in shaping language practices and identity construction within culturally and linguistically diverse university environments.
