Abstract
This study examines the use of digital media in Arabic language learning and its role in transforming digital literacy into communicative competence. It adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving lecturers and students in Arabic language programs at higher education institutions. The findings show that students actively use various digital tools, including online dictionaries, language learning applications, and artificial intelligence–based platforms, to support their understanding of meaning, structure, and language use. Digital media contribute to the development of four components of communicative competence, namely: (1) grammatical competence, which improves through greater accuracy in the use of language structures; (2) sociolinguistic competence, which develops through exposure to language variation and contextual use, although interaction remains largely indirect; (3) discourse competence, which is enhanced as students produce more coherent and well-structured texts through digital tasks such as blogs, vlogs, and captions; and (4) strategic competence, which emerges through the use of technology-based communication strategies, including translation, paraphrasing, and synonym selection. Furthermore, students’ digital literacy shifts from a functional level to a more reflective and productive level, indicated by their ability to create content, think critically, and collaborate in digital environments. However, challenges include limited technological infrastructure, overreliance on machine translation, and reduced motivation when digital activities lack interactivity. Overall, digital media function as effective learning tools but require integration with communicative and interactive pedagogical approaches to fully support communicative competence.
