Abstract

This study investigates how Arabic language education in Indonesian Islamic universities fosters religious moderation by promoting tolerance, critical thinking, and intercultural understanding. This Study employs a qualitative case study design, the data were collected through ethnographic observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang and UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the findings. The results reveal that pedagogical models such as TADBIR, PEACE, and Communicative Language Teaching effectively integrate moderation principles into Arabic instruction. Extracurricular programs and digital literacy initiatives further strengthen students’ capacity to navigate religious discourse and resist extremist ideologies. However, challenges persist, including linguistic barriers, inconsistent curricula, and cultural resistance. The study concludes that strategically aligned Arabic education significantly contributes to shaping tolerant and socially responsible graduates. These findings offer practical insights for curriculum development, faculty training, and institutional support to embed religious moderation in higher education contexts.
