Abstract

This chapter examines the historical development of Arabic language education from the pre-Islamic period to the contemporary digital era. Using a historical and literature-based approach, it traces the transformation of Arabic from an oral language of poetry and intertribal communication into the language of revelation, worship, administration, scholarship, and international communication. During the early Islamic period, Arabic education focused primarily on reading, writing, memorizing, and understanding the Qur’an through mosques, kuttab, and scholarly circles. Under the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, the expansion of Islam and the Arabization of administration encouraged the codification of Arabic grammar, morphology, rhetoric, and lexicography, while Arabic developed into a major language of science, literature, translation, and intellectual exchange. The chapter also discusses the development of Arabic education in Indonesia through mosques, surau, dayah, Islamic boarding schools, madrasas, Islamic schools, and universities. Traditional methods, including talaqqi, memorization, sorogan, and bandongan, gradually became integrated with structured curricula, communicative approaches, multimedia resources, online learning, and artificial intelligence. The historical analysis demonstrates a shift in learning objectives from religious and text-oriented purposes toward academic, communicative, professional, and digital competencies. Nevertheless, traditional grammatical and textual approaches remain important for understanding classical Islamic texts. The chapter concludes that future Arabic language education should integrate classical scholarly traditions, balanced language skills, communicative competence, and responsible digital literacy. Such integration is essential to maintain the relevance of Arabic as a language of religion, knowledge, culture, communication, and civilization
