Abstract

Abstract
The integration of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered large language model, into Arabic language learning has created new opportunities for interactive, adaptive, and personalized learning experiences. Although previous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in supporting foreign language acquisition, limited attention has been given to how ChatGPT facilitates learning from the perspective of cognitive theory, particularly in Arabic language education. This study addresses this gap by examining learner–ChatGPT interactions through the lens of cognitive theory, with particular emphasis on cognitive processes such as feedback processing, working memory activation, metacognitive regulation, and knowledge construction.
The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of learner–AI interaction patterns to identify the cognitive affordances and limitations of ChatGPT in Arabic language instruction. Grounded in cognitive theoretical frameworks, this research provides both theoretical and practical insights into optimizing AI-assisted learning environments for Arabic language education.
This study employed a qualitative research design using content analysis. The data consisted of secondary sources collected through an extensive literature review. The findings indicate that ChatGPT functions as a cognitive partner that supports Arabic language learning by facilitating scaffolding, promoting learning within the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), encouraging reflective dialogue, and enhancing learner autonomy. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on AI-assisted language learning and offer a conceptual foundation for designing Arabic language instruction that effectively integrates AI technologies with cognitive learning principles.
