Abstract

This theoretical review systematically analyzes the mechanism of visual media's influence on Arabic vocabulary acquisition. Despite empirical studies showing the effectiveness of visual media, a comprehensive theoretical synthesis explaining why and how this occurs from various learning and cognitive theories has been lacking. This study aims to explain how learning and cognitive theories (Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, Mayer's Principles of Multimedia Learning, and Second Language Acquisition theories) account for the impact of visual media on Arabic vocabulary enhancement, and to construct a conceptual framework illustrating the relationship between visual media characteristics, student cognitive processes, and Arabic vocabulary mastery outcomes. Employing a qualitative-descriptive literature review methodology, the research synthesizes relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that visual media effectively enhance Arabic vocabulary by strengthening memory representations through dual coding, optimizing working memory capacity, and facilitating comprehensive input. The proposed conceptual framework details the interplay between visual media characteristics (type, design, cultural relevance), student cognitive processes (attention, perception, elaboration, integration), and vocabulary mastery results (meaning comprehension, retention, contextual usage). This framework provides a theoretical foundation that bridges empirical observations with underlying cognitive mechanisms, offering practical guidance for educators and media developers to design and implement more effective visual media for Arabic vocabulary instruction.
