Abstract

Vocabulary (mufradāt) is an important component of Arabic language learning at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah level. However, knowing the meaning of a word does not necessarily mean that students can use it when listening, speaking, reading, or writing. This study examines the relevance of meaningful and contextual learning to the development of Arabic language skills among Madrasah Ibtidaiyah students and proposes a conceptual framework that links mufradāt with language use. The study employs a qualitative approach through a literature study of sources on mufradāt, Arabic language learning at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah level, meaningful and contextual learning, and the skills of istimā’, kalām, qirā’ah, and kitābah. The literature was compared and synthesized thematically to identify relationships among these concepts. The findings indicate that mufradāt should be treated as a resource for understanding and using the language rather than as material to be memorized. Vocabulary becomes more meaningful when it is connected to students’ existing knowledge and experiences, and its use can be strengthened through learning contexts close to their everyday lives. The study contributes a conceptual framework that integrates students’ experiences, mufradāt, meaning-making, context, and language use within a single learning process. The framework may guide the design of Arabic instruction and teaching materials at this level, but it is derived from the literature and still requires empirical testing.
