Abstract

This study analyzes the kinds of formative assessment technique used in Language Evaluation class taught by an English native speaker. It is focused on assessment activities that can reveal students’ understanding of specific subject. Using descriptive qualitative method, the study employed interviews, classroom observations, syllabus, and materials used for the class as the instruments of the study. The study reveals that the lecturer included various formative assessment technique in teaching activities to get information about students’ learning namely oral question, choral questioning, a quiz, Think-Pair-Share, Think-Pair-Write-Share, pair work, and group work. The delivery of each assessment technique differed in each lesson, but always preceded with questions before the technique applied. This study suggests that formative assessment practice in higher education can be useful, but it can be a real challenge for lecturers to apply to make informed and adequate decisions about further teaching.
