Abstract

This article contains information about the characteristics of slang in the Madura-Indonesian bilingual community in the Awar-awar area, Asembagus, Situbondo. This study of the characteristics of slang is carried out to map and identify the uniqueness of the slogan language in the bilingual society, so that it can add empirical information about the variations in slang that exist and develop in Indonesia. This research was conducted by utilizing sociolinguistics as an approach to reveal and explain the findings in a descriptive qualitative manner. In this case data collection is carried out by participatory observation activities. Researchers interact with the community directly and become part of the speech event. Based on the results of the study, it is known that there are two general characteristics of the use of the slang in the Awar-awar Asembagus Situbondo area, namely (1) mixed code with Madura as the core / dominant language and Indonesian as a mixture (in the form of phrases or words), and (2) ) the insertion of a meaningful syllable that results in a new vocabulary variation originating from two languages (Madurese-Indonesian). A specific example of new vocabulary resulting from this process is the word kamana'a which means 'where are you going'.
