Abstract

This study investigates the levels and determinants of religious tolerance among students in Islamic universities in East Java. The research explores the levels of religious tolerance among students in Islamic universities and examines the various factors influencing inter-religious, intra-religious, and political tolerance within this demographic. The study employs an extensive survey data collection method that encompasses responses from 1,004 participants across three Islamic universities in the middle of 2023. Analytical methods such as t-test comparisons and regression analysis are applied to assess various dimensions of religious tolerance. The findings indicate a moderate overall level of religious tolerance among the surveyed students. However, we found a relatively low level of tolerance on the students’ campus interactions, as well as a slightly negative attitude or reluctance to vote for candidates from different religions. Regression analysis reveals that students' study major does not significantly affect their religious tolerance scores. Attendance at Pesantren significantly influences inter- and intra-religious tolerance across all aspects. Additionally, involvement in campus organizations positively influences inter-religious tolerance, suggesting that actively engaged students tend to exhibit greater tolerance. The study underscores the importance of initiatives to facilitate inter-religious dialogue, promote inclusivity, and raise public awareness of Pesantren traditions in fostering greater religious tolerance among Islamic university students. The study acknowledges potential limitations related to unexplored variables and suggests future research avenues for a more nuanced understanding of religious tolerance dynamics in academic settings. Ultimately, this research contributes valuable insights to the existing literature on religious tolerance and offers practical recommendations for promoting interfaith relations among students in Islamic universities.
