Abstract

Academic writing is an essential skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to master in order to meet their academic requirements at the university level. To support this, Indonesian universities offer academic writing course(s) to help students develop this competence. This study was aimed at exploring the undergraduate students’ needs in academic writing, especially in writing thesis proposal. The data were collected through a five scaled questionnaire of need analysis distributed to fifty-four EFL students from ABC university, and a focus group interview involved nine participants. The results indicated that 94.6% of students feel they need a practical guide to assist them in writing proposals. Then 72.2% of students need more assistance in writing references effectively. In addition, there are 5 main areas of need: guidebook, research topic selection, introduction writing training, literature review writing training, methodology training, and reference writing training. Furthermore, this study suggests that a guidebook for thesis writing is needed. The students also need focused-training for writing thesis, especially thesis proposal writing.
