Abstract
The ecological crisis besieging the Brantas Watershed (DAS Brantas) in Malang presents a multidimensional predicament that transcends environmental degradation, simultaneously reflecting a crisis of values and human spirituality in their treatment of nature. This article endeavors to interrogate the interweaving nexus between religious education and the ecotheological ethics of Islam, Christianity, and Catholicism as an alternative discourse for addressing ecological devastation. The principal aim of this research is to elucidate how religious doctrines are transformed into educational praxis that cultivates ecological consciousness, while simultaneously unveiling interfaith spiritual dynamics with the potential to reinforce ecological solidarity within the multicultural milieu of Malang. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on religious educational communities directly engaged with the Brantas Watershed. Data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders, educators, and surrounding communities, as well as textual analysis of religious documents and educational curricula. The findings demonstrate that Islamic ecotheology underscores the principles of khalifah (stewardship) and amanah (trusteeship) in safeguarding the earth; Christian traditions articulate the spirituality of “creation care” as an ethical calling; while Catholicism accentuates the spirit of Laudato Si’, emphasizing universal ecological responsibility. Collectively, these traditions converge into a rich ecological ethic that can be fruitfully integrated into interfaith educational practices. The discussion reveals that ecotheology-based pedagogies are capable of dismantling exploitative attitudes and nurturing collective awareness to preserve rivers as a shared source of life. This article recommends the integration of ecotheological curricula into both formal and non-formal religious education, while fostering interfaith dialogue to galvanize ecological movements grounded in spirituality. The novelty of this research lies in its comparative, cross-traditional approach, which synthesizes ecological ethics and spiritualities as a foundational framework for reconstructing religious education oriented toward sustainability.
