Abstract

his study analyzes the role of documentary films in fostering historical awareness in history learning at MAN 1 Lamongan. The research addresses the issue of history education being seen as monotonous and based on memorization, especially through conventional methods. In the digital era, documentary films serve as an innovative way to help students understand complex historical topics. The study focuses on how documentary films are used as learning media at MAN 1 Lamongan, which has good facilities but does not use them optimally.A descriptive qualitative method is used, with data collected through interviews with history teachers and students, classroom observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Thematic analysis identifies key patterns and findings. The results show that documentary films effectively improve student engagement and understanding of historical material. Visuals and narratives help students remember historical events better.However, challenges include long film durations, formal narration, and technical issues during screenings. The teacher’s role as a facilitator is crucial for reinforcing material and guiding discussions. The study concludes that documentary films are effective for developing students’ historical awareness when supported by good teacher preparation, appropriate film choices, and time management. It recommends improving teachers’ technological skills, encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration, and ensuring adequate facilities. Theoretically, the study contributes to the understanding of innovative learning media in history education.
