Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character development of students in the Social Sciences Education Study Program (PIPS) through lecturers’ role modeling at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, particularly in terms of speech, actions, and attitudes. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using descriptive analysis. Data validity was ensured through source, method, and theoretical triangulation. The findings indicate that student character development through lecturers’ role modeling takes place through five stages: providing understanding, fostering habituation through institutional policies, creating a conducive environment and positive interactions, demonstrating exemplary behavior beginning with the lecturers, and presenting appropriate role models. In terms of speech, lecturers demonstrate exemplary conduct through polite language, effective communication, greetings, mutual reminders, and respectful forms of address. In terms of actions, role modeling is reflected in punctuality, participation in congregational worship, involvement in religious activities, social concern, and the practice of sharing and helping others. In terms of attitudes, lecturers provide examples through noble character, wisdom, respect for differences, care, guidance, and consistency in social and religious interactions. The main character values developed include honesty, discipline, and responsibility. The internalization of these values is strengthened through discussions on ethics and morality, assignments that promote academic integrity, self-reflection, the provision of support and sanctions, the use of relevant learning resources, and personal guidance. This study concludes that the integration of exemplary speech, actions, and attitudes among lecturers constitutes an important element in student character development, particularly when supported by institutional policies, habituation, and an academic culture grounded in Islamic values.
