Abstract

This article investigates the critical negotiation of British and American Englishes (BAE) through the problematisation of these two varieties in the newspaper The Jakarta Post. In this paper, the word „problematisation‟ is used to question the dominant construction of BAE as the only legitimate varieties. Firstly, I map the areas of problematisation addressed by two Indonesian scholars and place these areas in the field of critical applied linguistics. Secondly, the historical context of English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia is explained to understand why the hegemonic structure of BAE remains uninterrupted. The problematisation of BAE focuses on „standard‟ versus „non-standard‟ English(es), ownership, intelligibility and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) users‟ identities, including the capitalisation of sociocultural contexts and the shifts of subject positions as the strategies. The problematisation is also used to unpack the socio-economic, political and historical constructions of BAE by problematising the netizens‟ subjectivities favouring BAE. Bakhtin‟s concept of dialogism is also used to provide additional analysis.
