Abstract
Arabic Language Teaching for Non-Native Speakers (ALTNS) has increasingly evolved into a strategic and multidisciplinary field in response to expanding academic mobility, digital transformation, and the internationalization of Islamic and Arabic studies. Despite the growing volume of scholarship on Arabic language education, the field remains largely fragmented, with limited efforts to conceptualize ALTNS as an autonomous academic discipline characterized by its own epistemological foundations, pedagogical paradigms, and research agenda. This chapter addresses this conceptual gap by proposing an integrative framework that synthesizes insights from applied linguistics, second language acquisition, educational psychology, curriculum studies, educational technology, and the socio-cultural dimensions of language learning. The chapter critically examines the theoretical foundations and contemporary developments that shape ALTNS, including curriculum innovation, communicative language teaching, Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP), authentic assessment, instructional materials development, teacher professional competence, digital learning ecosystems, and the integration of artificial intelligence into Arabic language education. Drawing upon conceptual analysis and interdisciplinary synthesis, it argues that effective Arabic language instruction for non-native speakers requires evidence-informed pedagogical models that are context-sensitive, learner-centered, technologically enriched, and responsive to diverse educational settings. By positioning ALTNS as an emerging academic discipline rather than merely a pedagogical practice, this chapter contributes to the ongoing scholarly discourse on the future direction of Arabic language education. It offers a conceptual foundation for advancing theoretical inquiry, methodological innovation, and evidence-based educational practice while identifying promising avenues for future research and international academic collaboration. The chapter is intended to serve as a reference for researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, policymakers, and practitioners committed to strengthening the global scholarship and institutional development of Arabic Language Teaching for Non-Native Speakers.
